During sweet baby Mason’s Houston Newborn photos, we chatted about which of the umpteen baby items are really worth buying! So along with Mason’s newborn session, I’m sharing 3 tips before buying all the baby things for all the mommas-to-be out there!

I had the privilege of photographing Kyle and Taylor in the fall for their baby announcement! So getting to meet this little man was pretty special! Look at that sweet face! Cue the baby fever!
All it takes is one quick Pinterest search to realize the list of baby “needs” is actually insane! From the decked out crib to organic cotton clothes to BPA-free toys to high-end strollers, there are so many things people are telling you to buy. Preparing for the baby can be SO fun but so exhausting at the same time!
While you do need quite a few things for your baby, here is my advice:
You don’t NEED everything right away. Every baby is SO different and what your friend (or Pinterest) says you need might not be something you will actually use. So do the research. Look at the products to see what’s out there but hold off on buying until the baby gets here.
Some of the things you don’t need those first few months anyway.
Plus, when you have a baby that hates the swing, you’ll be glad you held off on buying that $250 MamaRoo! Ha! Kinsey hated it but Emery loves it! Which brings me to my next point…
If you have friends with babies, try to borrow and trade as much as possible! There are so many baby apparatuses that truly help so much but everything is so temporary. One swing or jumper might be your baby’s BFF for one day and then never use it again.
Everyone raved about the Dockatot but I wasn’t sure if it’d be worth it when Kinsey was born. Thankfully, a friend let me borrow hers. Kinsey LOVED it so we ended up getting one for her! And let me tell you they are worth their weight in gold!
I also noticed that Kinsey absolutely LOVED being bounced so I knew I needed to get a swing for her. Since the MamaRoo was all the rage, we borrowed that from a friend too. It turned out that she actually hated it! We ended up getting a super basic but amazing compact swing like this instead with (shocking!) just one feature–swinging–and she LOVED IT!
I learned this lesson the hard way. Before Kinsey was born, friends and family showered us with love and baby gifts. We were beyond grateful and it felt like Christmas morning anytime a gift came in the mail! I’d immediately open it, wash it, and put it in her room.
After our first baby shower, I did the same thing with excitement! We were blessed with two additional showers (from family and Kellan’s work) and so many sweet gifts and clothes. Once I finally had everything in one spot, there were quite a few duplicates and so many clothes all in the same size. By then most of them had been washed so it was too late to return.
Hindsight, some patience would have done me good! Then I could have seen everything all together. I would have seen all those newborn jammies and returned them for other sizes or picked my favorite of the three hooded bath towels. It would have been easier to see what we needed, what needed to be returned, etc.
